In an effort to clean up the streets, literally and physically, Mayor Rahm Emanuel and city officials are giving free brooms, rakes, trash bags and cleaning supplies to neighborhood organizations. The initiative is part of a new day of service announced by the city called “Pitch In Chicago.”

Community groups can register for the August 23 event by calling 311 by August 15. Then the groups can pick up free supplies from the Department of Streets and Sanitation.

“By joining with your neighbors and school community for just a few hours to collect litter, remove weeds or clean a vacant lot, Chicagoans can help revitalize their neighborhood and their city.” said Charles Williams, commissioner of the Department of Streets and Sanitation, in a news release for the event.
