Chicago Public Schools’s mass closing of roughly 50 schools and its school actions plan were “flawed in important ways,” according to the Illinois General Assembly.

The state legislature released an annual report criticizing CPS for a number of plans and actions the district implemented last year.

The report finds that despite regulations, CPS did not do enough to include the public in many of its decisions last year, including closing public schools and opening more charter schools. The district also ignored research and feedback in its decisions.

“Chicago can build a world-class, well-managed, inclusive and equitable public education system for all of Chicago’s students, but it will not happen without a plan that is well-understood by all stakeholders and has gained their backing for it.”

Ultimately the report recommends CPS expand public engagement and coordination.
