United Airlines and American Airlines are shamming Chicago and Cook County out of millions in tax dollars, according to the Regional Transportation Authority (RTA). The RTA–in charge of budgeting and planning for the Chicago Transit Authority(CTA), Metra and Pace–released a two minute video detailing the accusation.

RTA filed a lawsuit today against United Airlines, but deferred suing American, due to the airline’s current bankruptcy proceedings. The organization claims United and American run “sham offices” in Sycamore, Ill. The airlines allegedly report the offices as locations for purchasing jet fuel, in order to avoid paying higher taxes for their real offices in Chicago. The scam takes away from local sales tax revenue that the RTA depends on, and makes taxpayers cover the loss, RTA claims.
